This program is designed to provide professional certification and/or a Master of Education degree (M.Ed.). Students may satisfy, in certain instances, the requirements for both the Master of Education degree and state certification. In addition to meeting the requirements for admission to Wayland’s graduate program, students must meet the criteria for admission to the Professional Education Program:

Steps/Timeline to Complete Professional Certifications

Admission to Graduate School

  1. File completed application for the Professional Education Program and Grad School
  2. Meet GPA and degree requirements for admission to Grad School and the specific degree requirements
  3. Indicate specific non-teacher certification desired

Admission to the Education Preparation Program

  1. Provide a copy of a valid teacher certification
  2. Provide evidence of required minimum years teaching experience
  3. Submit service record
  4. Interview
  5. Apply to the Education Preparation Program
  6. Submit autobiography
  7. TEA Required Trainings

Upon admission to the Education Preparation Program Coursework

  1. Contact advisor for course direction and selection
  2. Prior to the practicum, pass the practice exam and attempt the state exam
  3. Complete all program and/or degree requirements
  4. Candidate will be recommended to certify

Time for completion does vary for each individual. The recommended timeline for completion for most candidates is 2 to 4 years.

Capstone Experience

Performance Assessment for School Leaders (PASL) Tasks and Completing Degree Requirements

The Performance Assessment for School Leaders (PASL) is an evidence-based performance assessment designed to assess instructional leadership during a candidate’s clinical experience prior to receiving a license. This assessment evaluates school leadership candidates on their ability to impact instruction and student learning. The PASL consists of three tasks. Each of the three tasks will take place during the school leadership candidate’s clinical experience and will focus on the principal as instructional leader. The school leadership candidate’s internship will provide a variety of artifacts, including plans, student work, and feedback, that will be submitted as part of the tasks. The school leadership candidate will be able to work on the tasks as he or she experiences the internship and will submit all three tasks simultaneously. The PASL tasks will be allowed to be submitted through the Texas Education window once all other degree and course requirements have been met, including passing the state exam and receiving credit for the Principal Internship courses.

EDAD 5337 - Application of Administrative Concepts  is offered each spring Session 1 and must be taken prior to EDAD 5348  and EDAD 5349 . These are the Principal Internship courses offered in both sessions of the fall and spring. The TExES Principal practice exam is given as the final in EDAD 5337 . This course may only be taken when 24 hours of the degree requirements have been satisfied or approved by the Program Coordinator. The practice exam must be passed and the state exam must be attempted prior to enrolling in the Principal Intern courses (EDAD 5348  and EDAD 5349 ).
