Admission Requirements
In addition to the requirements listed for Wayland’s Graduate Studies program, applicants must also meet the following prerequisites for admission into the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies in English and History:
- An earned bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university of college.
- A minimum of 6 undergraduate hours in both history and English (with a B or higher).
- Three hours in a foreign language or demonstrated competency at the level through CLEP, ETS or similar exam, any of which may be completed concurrently as leveling coursework.
- An entrance essay. Applicants who score lower than 14 on the entrance essay must take ENGL 5300 - Academic Writing for Graduate Students to improve their writing skills at the first opportunity. Applicants who score lower than 10 may be denied or encouraged to take ENGL 5300 on a provisional acceptance of passing ENGL 5300 . (This may count towards the 18 hours of English.)
Comprehensive Exam
Students should register for ENGL 5102 - Comprehensive Exam in their last one or two sessions of attendance. The exam requires students to familiarize themselves with specific texts from the current reading list and write analytical essays in response to questions related to those texts. A committee of English and History faculty, selected by the deans of both schools, will read and evaluate all comprehensive exams completed in the term. Results of the exam will be “Credit/CR” or “No Credit/NCR.”
Students who receive No Credit on the first attempt may attempt the exam a second time in the next four sessions. If students receive No Credit on the exam a second time, they will not be allowed to take the exam without taking additional course work.
Transfer Credit
Applicants may transfer up to 12 hours of approved graduate credit from an accredited college or university to satisfy the degree requirements. To attempt to transfer credit from other institutions, applicants must submit an official transcript of the courses to be considered, and may also be required to submit a catalog description and course syllabus from the institution where the course was taken. The dean of the school must approve the transfer credit.
