An alternative route to receiving a Texas teaching certificate is offered to candidates who have completed a Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree from an accredited university with a GPA of 2.7 or better, in a field other than teacher certification. Candidates can choose one of two routes towards Alternative Certification.
Candidates can choose the Alternative Certification route tha is a 0-credit certification only program. The total cost is $5,000 with a $500 down payment required, and can then be paid off on a monthly basis.
The second, certification-only, option is for candidates to take 19 credit hours of coursework and pay the standard tuition rates as applicable by the university.
Candidates must complete the following to progress through the Alternative Certification program, in the order listed below:
- File completed application to the WBU Graduate School
- Meet GPA and degree requirements for admission to Grad School and the specific degree requirements
- Indicate specific initial certification desired
- Take and pass the Pre-Admission Certification Test (PACT) in certification field will be teaching
- Apply to the Education Preparation Program (EPP)
- Submit autobiography
- Complete interview with Coordinator of Alternative Certification Program
- Once Teacher Education Committee (TEC) approves admission, pass content exam
- Pass all Texas Education Agency (TEA) Required Trainings and pay the $55 TEA fee
- Contact advisor for course direction and selection
- Complete 150 clock hours of instruction prior to completion of one-year internship
- Complete 50 hours of field experiences prior to completion of one-year internship
- Be recommended for one-year Internship by TEC and TEA, prior to its beginning
- Prior to Internship, complete Deficiency Plan with EPP and school district where will complete Internship
- Prior to completion of Internship, complete pedagogy exam or portfolio
- Complete all program and/or TEA requirements
- Be recommended by TEC for initial certification
- Once all program and TEA requirements have been met, will be recommended to TEA for initial teacher certification
