The Bachelor of Arts in Music degree is a broad-based interdisciplinary program which combines music studies with those of other disciplines. In addition to a well-developed program of general studies, students have the opportunity to explore diverse music options through several emphasis areas: General Music, Theory/Composition, and Church Music and Worship.

Requirements for Major in Music (Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts Degrees):


All students desiring acceptance and admission into the School of Music degree program as a major or a minor must meet the following requirements:

  • Successful admission into Wayland Baptist University.
  • Completion of an audition revealing the possession of sufficient skills in one’s musical performance medium to be successful in university music study.
  • Students may receive Probationary Acceptance. In this case, all requirements must be successfully completed no later than the end of the second semester of study in order to earn Full Acceptance into the music program as a major or minor.

No course grades below C or 70% will count in the major degree programs in the School of Music. This includes all classroom, ensemble, and private study courses. The degree programs affected are Bachelor of Music-Music Education, Bachelor of Music-Performance, and Bachelor of Arts-Music. If a student earns grades below 70% in any course required in the major, the student will be required to repeat that course until they receive 70% or higher.

University General Education Core Curriculum - 43 hrs


The University General Education Core Curriculum is applied to all degrees at Wayland Baptist University with the exception of the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.), Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) and the Bachelor of Christian Ministry (B.C.M.) degrees. Bachelor of Arts Degree Specific General Education Core Course Requirements - 15-16 hrs


The Bachelor of Arts Degree (B.A.) is a minimum 124-semester hour degree. A minimum of 42 semester hours must be upper-level credit (courses numbered 3000 and above). Major and minor fields of study included in the degree also have upper-level requirements. As these may vary depending on the discipline selected, specific requirements are included in the subject field sections of the catalog. Because of the nature of the degree, it includes additional study in the fine arts and in foreign language. These additional requirements are included in the degree specific general education core. Academic Major and Minor


The B.A. degree is designed primarily for students desiring to study in the arts, the humanities, or the social sciences. Major fields of study approved for the B.A. degree are listed in the Academic Program Profile table following the degree requirement section of the catalog. In the majority of instances, the major requires the completion of 30 semester hours. Specific semester-hours as well as course requirements are included in that section of the catalog dedicated to the discipline selected.

Students pursuing the B.A. degree must select a minor or second major from any discipline identified by the university as an approved minor or major field. The typical minor consists of 18 semester hours. Electives


Students may complete the minimum 124 semester hours required for the degree with courses which complement or extend career preparation or pursue subject fields which hold special appeal. However, before using elective semester hours, students should check with their advisor to ensure that the hours are indeed elective and that upper-level semester hour requirements for graduation are being met.

Theory and Composition Specialization - 45 hrs:


General music study with the opportunity to pursue elective studies in music theory and/or composition with a minor degree in any secondary discipline (English recommended for development of writing skills).

Students pursuing the B.A. degree must select a minor or second major from any discipline identified by the university as an approved minor or major field.  The typical minor consists of 18 semester hours, 12 of which must be upper-level division hours.  Specific semester hours as well as course requirements for the majors and minors are included in that section of the catalog dedicated to the discipline selected. Notations:


MUSI 3302 - Music Technology  must be taken in the May micro-term after the freshman or sophomore year.

* General Education Core courses which are flexible and may be taken in any order: three hours of ART or THEA; POLS 2301 ; COMS 1301 , COMS 1303 , COMS 2302 , or COMS 2303 ; three hours from ECON 2307 , GEOG 1301  or GEOG 1302 , PHIL 1301 , PSYC 1301 , SOCI 1301 .

** Foreign language 1401 and 1402 may be required before advancing to 2301.

*** HIST requirement must be sequential and of one history area, such as US History ( HIST 2301  and HIST 2302 ), or World Civilization (HIST 1303  and HIST 1304 ). HIST 1303  and HIST 1304  are recommended for music performance majors.
