Nursing, RN to BSN Completion Program, B.S.N.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing, RN-to-BSN program at Wayland Baptist University is designed for working nurses who want to leverage their experience and streamline their path to an accredited nursing degree. Through online coursework, students further develop skills in the key areas of patient care, technology, information management, and generalist nursing practices to help improve the quality of patient care and community health.
Students complete prerequisite coursework (18 credits) before beginning the program. Registered nurses may receive 29 hours of advanced placement credit for prior nursing education after the review and validation of those credits. All applicants must have a prerequisite GPA of 2.5.
Admissions Requirements
Applicants for admission to the nursing program must complete the application process by June 30th for fall admission and by November 30th for spring admission.
A student’s overall academic record is considered for admission, including:
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale in all coursework.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.00 scale in all nursing coursework.
- Required Pre-requisites 18 credits:
- Appropriate NCLEX results.
- Completed Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (AAS) from an accredited institution.
- An unencumbered Texas RN license. License must be valid throughout program completion.
- Current employment as a professional nurse (employment verification required).
- One recommendation letter from a healthcare employer (supervisor) or former nursing faculty.
- All general education requirements (core curriculum) and prerequisites must be documented on official transcripts before enrollment in nursing courses.
- The following immunizations: Baseline and annual TB Tuberculosis) testing and COVID-19 vaccine as indicated by CDC.
- Completion of all prerequisite courses with a minimum of C.
Only science prerequisites taken within the last 5 years will be accepted for the undergraduate application.
Any transfer or current students who have failed two or more NURS courses within a nursing concentration or related courses in a nursing program at any educational
institution will be ineligible to re-apply to the WBU SON nursing program for two years after their most recent course failure.
Fulfillment of these guidelines does not guarantee admission. Those qualified applicants with higher GPAs will be considered first. Any additional consideration for admission will be reviewed on an individual basis and will be approved at the discretion of the Dean of the School of Nursing.
Applicants and incoming students need to be aware that while the School of Nursing does not require COVID- 19 vaccination, our clinical partners do require that all
students are current on COVID-19 vaccinations before clinical placement, with proof of vaccination provided in advance.
As the successful completion of the clinical component of your program is essential for graduation, students will not be able to complete the program requirements for
graduation without verification of these clinical requirements:
- 3-step series, Hepatitis B Vaccine (Hep B),
- Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR),
- Seasonal Influenza (flu shot),
- Tetanus-Diphtheria Acellular Pertussis (Tdap), and
- Varicella (Chickenpox) Vaccine.
- Official documentation of all required immunizations must be submitted.
- CPR certification taught by the American Heart Association.
Applicants who receive offers of admission will be required to consent to a criminal background check. A history of criminal conduct or convictions may result in the withdrawal of the admission offer. See the Criminal Background Checks section of the School of Nursing Student Handbook for the SON policy. No student will be allowed to matriculate without a cleared criminal background check.
Transfer Credit
Courses from other nationally accredited (ACEN or CCNE) institutions with equivalent course content will be considered for transfer credit if a grade of “C” or better was earned. Pass/Fail courses are not acceptable for transfer. If any of the prerequisites have been or will by earned CLEP exam, students will not receive credit toward the GPA calculation. CLEP credit must be on an original score report in order to be processed for us to accept it.
Admission Decisions
An admission decision can fall into one of the categories below:
- Offered admission
- Offered admission with a contingent for coursework needed
- Offered admission with provisional NCLEX needed
- Denied admission
Licensure Eligibility Requirements
Upon graduation from the School of Nursing, you will apply for licensure with the Texas Board of Nursing (BON). When applying, the BON will require you to answer the following questions:
- Have you been convicted of a misdemeanor?
- Have you been convicted of a felony?
- Have you pled nolo contender, no contest, or guilty?
If you answer yes to any of these questions for any criminal offense, including those pending appeal you will be required to petition the BON for licensure. Wayland Baptist University School of Nursing recommends that you start the petition process now to have clearance upon graduation.

The Unified General Education Core is required for all bachelor degrees at Wayland.

Notations:
- ENGL 1301 and ENGL 1302 should be taken within first year of enrollment.
- COMS requirement may differ by degree. The B.S.N. specifies COMS 1301 or higher. Students pursuing teacher certification should take COMS 2302 .
- Creative Arts requirements for the B.S.N. specifies ART 1301 or higher, or MUSI 1303 or higher. The B.M. degree specifies ART 1301 , ART studio course, HUMA 2300 or ENGL 3330 . The B.S.I.S. EC-6 degree can take FNAR 2401 . The B.A. Worship Studies specifies MUSI 3305 . Students pursuing the B.S. Mathematics with minor in Engineering dual degree must choose from ART 1301 , ART Studio Course, or MUSI 1303 .
- Students in the B.S. Mathematics with minor in Engineering dual degree or who are seeking teacher certification must take an ENGL literature elective.
- HIST 1303 or HIST 1304 can be applied to either History or Multi-Cultural sections.
- HIST 2301 and HIST 2302 are required for teacher certification and the B.S. Mathematics with minor in Engineering dual degree.
- To ensure broad training, no more than 6 credit hours from Literature or History may fulfill the requirements for Cultural Perspectives within Community; however, students may use the Multi-Cultural history or literature course options to fulfill 3 hours of Literature or History requirements, and then may also complete an additional Multi-Cultural course from a different discipline.
- Students with two years of documented high school foreign language (minimum grade of ‘B’ or 3.0) may enroll in 2000-level courses (or higher where prerequisites allow) in that same language. Any student with significant informal background in a foreign language may contact the School of Languages and Literature for information about placement testing.
- Students pursuing the B.A.S. Banking and Finance, B.A.S. Business Administration, B.A.S. Business Analytics, B.A.S. Computer Information Systems, B.A.S. Computer Science, B.A.S. Digital Marketing, B.A.S. Environmental Sciences, B.A.S. Mission in Business, B.B.A., B.S., B.S.I.S. Middle School Core Subjects, B.S.I.S. Middle School Math, or B.S.I.S. Middle School Science degrees are required to take MATH 1304 .
- B.S.N. students must take BIOL 3410 to meet this requirement.
- Students associated primarily with the Plainview campus must take a 4-hour laboratory science course to fulfill the Unified General Education science requirement. Students not associated primarily with the Plainview campus may fulfill the science requirement through a 4-hour laboratory science course or the 3-hour non-lab version.
- ECON 2307 cannot be used for students pursuing the A.A.S. Business Administration, B.A.S. Business Administration, B.B.A. (all specializations), or B.C.M. Co-vocational Ministry with General Business specialization degrees. Students in the B.S. Mathematics with minor in Engineering dual degree must take ECON 2307 , PSYC 1301 , or SOCI 1301 to meet this requirement.
- EDUC 2307 is required for teacher certification.
- PSYC 1301 is required for students pursuing the B.S.N. degree.
- Wayland Baptist University will not accept RLGN 1301 - Old Testament History or RLGN 1302 - New Testament History , or their equivalents, from any institution except other Baptist institutions to meet the core requirement in any Wayland degree. If a student has taken RLGN 1301 and/or RLGN 1302 , or their equivalents, at any institution except other Baptist institutions, then the student has two options to meet the core requirement: (1) take RLGN 1301 and/or RLGN 1302 at Wayland, or (2) take THST 4310 , THST 4311 , THST 4312 , THST 4313 , or THST 4320 in lieu of RLGN 1301 ; and/or take THST 4320 , THST 4321 , THST 4322 , or THST 4323 in lieu of RLGN 1302 . THST 4320 may be an option for either RLGN 1301 or RLGN 1302 as stated above, but may not count for both on the same degree plan. No other THST/MNST courses may substitute for either RLGN 1301 or RLGN 1302 . The Dean of the School of Christian Studies must approve any exception to this policy. RLGN 1301 or RLGN 1302 , or their equivalents, taken at non-Baptist institutions, may be transferred as elective credit with approval of the Dean of the School of Christian Studies and the Registrar.
- Students who have served two or more years in the Armed Forces are exempt from EXSS requirements with DD-214 from basic training.
- Students associated primarily with the Plainview campus must take BASC 1200 and EXSS 1112 . Students not associated primarily with the Plainview campus will take BASC 1301 .
- GRAD 0001 not required for Associate degree.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree Specific General Education Course Requirements - 22-25 hrs
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (B.S.N.) provides students the ability to complete a degree in two years after completing the general education core. All students must have completed the Hepatitis B series prior to beginning the program. All students will be required to complete a drug screen and a background check prior to admission to the program. The Hepatitis B series, drug screen, and background investigation are at the cost of the student. Contact the School of Nursing for current costs. In addition to the Unified General Education Core, students must complete the following degree specific general education requirements for the B.S.N. degree:
Academic Major and Minor
The major field of study for the B.S.N. is a composite. This means that a second major or minor is not required for the degree. Student pursuing the L.V.N. to B.S.N. degree program should contact the School of Nursing for further information.
Electives
Electives are not required for the completion of this degree. Nursing Major
The student will complete the program with 30 credit hours of upper-level nursing courses. All courses are sequential.
