B.S. Mathematics/Pre-Engineering degree plan

Mathematics Major with Engineering Minor

Wayland has dual degree programs with other colleges in the areas of engineering.

In essence, a student spends three years at Wayland taking mathematics, science, and core requirements. Along with some summer work, the final two years to two and a half years are spent at an Engineering school (like West Texas A&M or Texas Tech) taking engineering classes. Enough hours from the Engineering school are transferred to Wayland to allow a student to obtain a B.S. in mathematics (with a minor in engineering from Wayland) at the same time as their B.S. in a specific field of engineering (civil, electrical, etc.) from the other university.

Engineering is a five-year course of study and this program gives an attractive way to receive two degrees while completing most core and mathematics courses in a small college setting. Because this is a dual degree program, the degree from Wayland must be completed in the same year and term as the degree from the other university.

Courses to be Completed at Wayland

(with a 3.0 grade point average or better)

University General Education Core Curriculum - 44 hrs

Degree Specific General Education - 14 hrs

Math Major - 33 hrs

The major requires 33 hours, of which 18 hours are upper-level. *MATH 1306  can be used to fulfill three hours of degree core requirements in math.

Additional Requirement - 1 hrs

Courses to be Completed at West Texas A&M University or Texas Tech University

The Engineering school may accept only certain classes from the options listed above. It may also require additional core curriculum classes not covered by Wayland’s core. See the official Degree Plan for details. Taking courses in the summer during the time courses are being taken at Wayland is recommended. Number of hours in the major depends upon the type of engineering chosen with a minimum of 45 hours.
